Dobrindt: Decision on Union's Chancellorship Candidacy in "September or October"

CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt expects the CSU federal executive committee to make a decision on the union's chancellorship candidacy at the beginning of next month.

“The decision must be made in September or October at the latest,” said Dobrindt on Monday in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”. He justified this by saying that the election campaign for the federal election in autumn 2021 had to be prepared in good time.

Dobrindt emphasized that the CSU would only agree to a joint candidate if it were a conservative candidate. "This must not be a candidate like (former Greens boss) Cem Özdemir or (SPD top candidate) Saskia Esken, who are not on our course" Dobrindt said.

According to Dobrindt, the CSU will only nominate a candidate of its own if the CDU does not offer a suitable candidate.
