Zach Arnett Named Mississippi State Football's New Head Coach
Proven Leader to Take Reins of Bulldog Program
STARKVILLE, Miss. - January 16, 2023
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the college football world, Mississippi State University has named Zach Arnett as its new head football coach. Arnett, who has served as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator since 2020, takes over for Mike Leach, who passed away unexpectedly on December 12, 2022.
Arnett, 36, is a Mississippi native who grew up in Starkville. He has a long history with the Bulldogs, having played linebacker for the team from 2005 to 2008. After graduating from Mississippi State, Arnett began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss. He then spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator at South Alabama before returning to Starkville in 2020.
During his tenure as defensive coordinator, Arnett has helped the Bulldogs become one of the top defenses in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In 2022, Mississippi State's defense ranked 11th in the nation in total defense and 6th in the SEC. Arnett's defense has also been known for its ability to create turnovers, forcing 25 turnovers in 2022.
Arnett is known for his aggressive and attacking style of defense, which has helped the Bulldogs become one of the most feared defenses in the country. He is also a very good recruiter, having helped Mississippi State land some of the top recruits in the state. Arnett is a rising star in the coaching ranks, and many believe that he has the potential to be one of the best head coaches in the country.
Mississippi State is hoping that Arnett can continue the success that Leach had during his tenure in Starkville. Leach led the Bulldogs to a pair of bowl games and a 9-4 record in 2022. Arnett will have a tough act to follow, but he is confident that he can lead Mississippi State to even greater heights.
